Self-Love Is More Important Than You May Think!


You have probably heard the old saying “In order to love anyone else, you must love yourself first.” If you are like most of us, you have probably heard it many times over the years, yet never really figured out what it meant or why it was relevant. The fact is that if you do not think well of yourself, it shows – it influences the way you interact with other people, the way you treat yourself, and even your basic outlook.

Holding yourself in high regard is important; but perhaps an even better way of looking at self-love is by using the term self-acceptance. When you view it from this perspective, you will probably be able to easily see that it does not exist in degrees: you either do, or you do not.

Many problems which people have are based on the fact that they do not fully accept themselves. When you begin learning how to do so, you will see many difficulties disappear, and many brighter possibilities opening to you. It is one of the most essential keys in a happy, fulfilling life!

You may wonder why it is so difficult for some people to accept themselves. In most instances, a person who has not developed a healthy sense of self-love has not been able to do so because he or she was taught the exact opposite. While many people were “taught” to not love or accept themselves all the way back in the early childhoods, many others have experienced this type of negativity in their adult lives. Women, especially, often become victimized by partners whose abusive tactics include diminishing the women's sense of self-acceptance and self-love.

Whether your difficulty with self-acceptance and self-love has stemmed from childhood experiences, or whether you have had an abusive partner in your life who made a point of putting you down, you do not need to lose hope – you need to regain it. You can begin to acknowledge yourself as a worthwhile human being – a person who has true value in simply being yourself.

The lack of self-love often comes from lowering your expectations of yourself to meet the negative messages of other people. You can begin to break the hold that this has had on you by empowering yourself with positive affirmations. Letting go of other people's negative definitions of who you are and what you are all about is a good start; but the most important basic in learning how to love and accept yourself goes much further than that.

Regardless of how much potential you may have, how much talent, how much ability, while these factors are important, they do not sum up who you really are. It is only when you have begun to see yourself as a person of worth and value, from nothing more nor less than being yourself that you will start to experience self-love and self-acceptance. When you can do this, you will be amazed at the impact it has on you, and the impact it will have on your life!
